Yes, they are not the same thing at all. Fitting in is not the synonymous with belonging. It makes me recall that fabulous quote, from the beloved poet Maya Angelou, from her 1973 interview with Bill Moyers, where she famously said, in answer to his question about belonging:

“You are only free when you realize you belong no place—you belong every place—no place at all. The price is high. The reward is great...". So much wisdom here, as she speaks to the paradox of true belonging...
